Jury citation for the 1990
prize
The 1990 "Calwer Hermann-Hesse-Förderpreis" for German-language
literary periodicals was awarded to the magazine verwendung,
edited by Egmont Hesse, Andreas Koziol and Ulrich Zieger and published
in East Berlin. The jury chose verwendung in recognition of
its "samizdat"-style status, it having been one of the self-published
and self-produced magazines to have appeared independently of the
official GDR publishing houses and in the face of resistance from
the East German authorities. The publishers of this magazine displayed
great commitment in their effort to help strengthen the self-awareness
of an entire generation of authors. More than anything else, verwendung
served as a vehicle for the publication of contemporary prose and
poetry from the GDR, helping to foster and promote the development
of new forms of literary expression. |
