Born in Weimar in 1948 and resident in the eastern
part of Berlin since 1959. Trained to become an English-French interpreter
in Leipzig and studied philosophy in East Berlin. Began to publish
her own poems and short prose works from 1966. Since 1978, a freelance
translator of literary works from English for a variety of publishers,
theatres, and the dubbing studios of East German television in 1978,
initially working on a part-time basis and - from 1981 - in a full-time
capacity. Following German reunification, she first worked as a translator
of non-fiction works before, from 1991 on, once again returning to
prose and fiction. The much-hailed new translation of Shakespeare's
complete sonnets earned Christa Schuenke the acclaimed Wieland-Preis
in 1997. Further awards include: Eva-Bornmenann-Scholarship 1990,
Working Scholarship of BCLT Norwich 1990 and 1998, Working Scholarship
of the Berlin Senate 1992, 1997, 1998 and 1999, Working Scholarship
of the European Translators Colloquium, Straelen 1993 and 1994, Working
Scholarship at the Tyrone-Guthrie-Centre, Annaghmakerrig, Ireland,
1995, writer-in-residence award at the Stuttgarter Schriftstellerhaus
and Ledig House, N.Y., USA, 1999.
