The son photographs the father:

Martin Hesse was close to Hermann Hesse in a way that the camera-shy writer could never be to outside photographers. Yet these are not the ordinary type of family photographs - Martin Hesse (1911-1968) was a professional photographer and a master of black-and-white contrasts. The appeal of the character portraits of his father derives both from their vigour and the meticulous compositions of the pictures.

Produced in the 1950s, the photos appeared on Hesse's 80th birthday in a slim volume published by Deutsche Schillergesellschaft, Marbach.
