Hermann-Hesse-Museum Calw - Tour 17/20

Hermann-Hesse-Museum in Calw

The showcase is reminiscent of the veranda in Hesse's house, "Casa Rossa," in Montagnola. The gardening clothes and tools are from Hesse's own effects.

The fairy-tale Piktors Verwandlung (1922) "was written and drawn for a dearly loved woman" - for Ruth Wagner, whom he married in 1924.

The marriage ends in divorce after just three years. In Hesse's own particular case, the "crisis of the man around fifty" is accompanied by an enormous thirst for life. The fruits of his impressions and experiences come together in the novel Der Steppenwolf.
