Casa Rossa in Montagnola, where Hesse resided with his third wife, Ninon, from 1931 until his death in 1962, becomes a meeting place for many émigrés during the "Third Reich." The guests also include Bertolt Brecht and Thomas Mann.

The publication of Hesse's major late work Das Glasperlenspiel was considered undesirable in Germany - and first appears in Zurich in 1943. Hermann Hesse is rewarded for his effort with the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1946.
