Hermann-Hesse-Museum Calw - Tour 14/20

Hermann-Hesse-Museum in Calw

The pseudonym Emil Sinclair, under which the novel Demian appeared in 1919, temporarily gives Hesse the freedom to publish his political articles "unencumbered by fame and animosities, unperturbed by pigeonholing." The portrait by Cuno Amiet shows the artist during this period.

Following the break-up of his family, Hesse leaves Berne and moves to Tessin, renting a small apartment at Casa Camuzzi in Montagnola, whose interior was captured on canvas in oil by the painter Hans Purrmann. The photograph shows "Klingsor's balcony."
