Hermann-Hesse-Museum Calw - Tour 02/20

Das Hermann-Hesse-Museum in Calw

Hermann Gundert, Hesse's maternal grandfather, was a missionary in India before joining the staff of the Calwer Vereinsbuchhandlung, later becoming its director. His daughter Marie, Hermann Hesse's mother, also married missionaries from India: first Charles Iceberg and, after his premature death, Hermann's father, Johannes Hesse. The latter's father, Carl Hermann Hesse, a country doctor in Weissenstein (Estonia) also had close links to pietism.

Johannes Hesse worked at the Basel Missionary School from 1881 to 1886, after which time the family returned to Calw. For almost 50 years, Hermann Gundert and Johannes Hesse shaped the literary destiny of the "Calwer Vereinsbuchhandlung" publishing company and bookstore, from which millions of religious books, tracts, pamphlets and works of popular science were sent out to readers around the world.
