Hermann-Hesse-Museum in Calw

In 1895, Hesse embarks on a three-year apprenticeship as a bookseller in Tübingen, using the time to immerse himself in literature as part of a wide-ranging "self-study" programme. His first volume of verse - Romantische Lieder - is published at his own expense.

In 1899, Hesse goes to work as an assistant bookseller in Basel. Among the stimulating circle of persons he mixes with is Elisabeth la Roche-Stockmeyer, to whom he dedicates several poems and who features in a number of his early writings from Hermann Lauscher to Gertrud.
