Hermann Hesse wrote the fairy-tale Piktors Verwandlung in 1923 for Ruth Wenger, whom he subsequently married, illustrating it with watercoloured pen-and-ink drawings. Hesse produced a number of copies of the story, each of them featuring a variety of brightly coloured illustrations, which he gave to friends or sold to help the needy. An especially painstakingly drawn and vividly coloured specimen was produced for Swiss publisher Hans Fretz.

Today, it forms part of the collection of the Sparkasse Pforzheim Calw. The lavishly finished facsimile edition comes with an afterword by Volker Michels
