Hermann Hesse's first son, Bruno Hesse, was born on December 9, 1905 in Zurich. At the time, the parents - Hesse and his first wife Mia - were living in Gaienhofen on Lake Constance. It is in this rural idyll that Hesse celebrates his first literary successes. After the failure of the marriage and the move away from Gaienhofen, Bruno is sent to live with Swiss painter friend Cuno Amiet near Berne, and is given drawing lessons. In 1926/27, he attends the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Geneva, and this is followed by several periods spent studying in Paris. Bruno Hesse continued to work as a painter up until his death in 1999. A few years before his death, Bruno Hesse recalled: "Father and I often used to go painting together, generally in the immediate vicinity of Collina d'Oro." Hesse's oldest son was married twice and has a son and daughter from his first marriage.
