Hesse's youngest son, Martin, was born on July 26, 1911 in Gaienhofen on Lake Constance. After Gymnasium, he completed a three-year apprenticeship with an architect in Thurn. This was followed by studies at the "Hochschule für Bau und Gestaltung" - the Bauhaus - founded in Dresden by Walter Gropius. As a freelance photographer and non-commercial ceramic artist, he made a name for himself as an artist, and Martin also produced many portraits of Hesse. In 1968, he took his own life. Martin Hesse was married with one daughter.
